Ipe Installation Guidelines

Ipe is an extremely dense hardwood with exceptional durability and performance characteristics. When installed properly, Ipe will provide a lifetime of beauty and service.

Here are some recommended tips for constructing an Ipe Deck...

Handling and Storage

Ipe is supplied as partially air-dried lumber and is for outdoor use. It should be stored out of direct sunlight and be allowed to acclimate and stablize to the installation environment humidity levels before installation. Allow for groundside ventilation in your design, as proper air circulation is necessary for long-term stability. When installing, there should be a gap between deck boards to aid in air circulation. Shrinkage of approximately 1/16" on 4" wide boards to 1/8" on 6" wide boards can be expected.

Cutting and Drilling

Due to the density of Ipe, carbide tipped saw blades and high quality drill bits are recommended for proper cutting and tool life. Pre-drill boards when ussing all types of fasteners to avoid splitting. Pre-drill a pilot hole and countersink when using standard screws. Self-drilling screws require the countersink hold be pre-bored.

End Sealing

Seal all ends immediately after cutting with an end sealer similar to "Anchorseal" or liquid parafin in order to help reduce end checking.

Fastening

High quality stainless steel fasteners are generally considered to provide superior service life and eliminate potential chemical reactions or staining of the wood at the fastener. Coated or galvanized steel fasteners can be used; however, they are not recommended.

Screws

Many installers typically use a #7 x 2 1/4" trim head screw. Test applications should be done with the fastener you intend to use to determine the need for pre-drilling. Some installers are using power nailers with stainless steel finish nails.

Hidden Fastening Systems

There are several types available. These systems are used to avoid the fastener showing on the deck surface. One system, which we offer, is the original Ipe clip. See our Ipe Clip page for details and prices.
