Hard Maple
Acer saccharum
Hard Maple is one of the hardest domestic North American woods with a Janka rating of over 1400. This means is holds fine details really well and is quite stable. While hard, Maple still works quite well both by machine and by hand. The heartwood is white while the sapwood is a light brown. Unlike other species, the sapwood is the preferred part of the tree for that bright, blank slate.
